I would love to try to get an ugly kitchen contest going on. Many clients feel embarrassed to open up their homes to their friends and family because they think that they have the worst kitchen.
If you think your kitchen is bad, you would be surprised at some of the dated kitchens in America.
Many kitchens and homes haven’t been touched since the 1970s. Mine wasn’t touched since the 50s before it was redone. I always thought I had the worst kitchen, I was totally embarrassed to invite anyone over. And it was a pain to work in the kitchen, I had to literally call my son to climb into the corner cabinet if I wanted something from there.
Can you imagine having company over and having to climb into a cabinet because you forgot to get that platter out? Well that has happened to me.
For years, I believe that my kitchen was one of the worst I have ever encountered. This kitchen which we worked on however, was a pretty bad one to start out with, and I realized that mine wasn’t the worst after all.
I had a client who bought her childhood home. There was a lot of nice memories associated with her growing up in the home. However when she started having kids, the home just stopped working for them. Unfortunately they couldn’t afford a bigger house in their neighborhood.
When I met the family, all the mother wanted was a kitchen that would work. They couldn’t imagine getting their dream home in that particular home. I encouraged her to dream bigger and tell me what her ideal space would look like. She wanted an open concept kitchen and family room where she could keep an eye on her kids as she cooked, since she was a busy professional who had to multi task.
My poor client, she had absolutely no storage space because even the washing machine was inside the kitchen, and they only had 2 cabinets. Taking pictures for the “Before” look was hard because there was just no space.
I don’t understand how she was cooking in this space, since I couldn’t imagine cooking there myself. So when I spoke about the client’s Dream Home, she started laughing at me. How the hell can I create a dream kitchen from this?
The answer lies in space planning. I was able to give the client a couple of alternatives based on what she told me. Invest in good kitchen design, because these changes helps you live your life every single day for the next few decades.
We decided to open up 2 walls to give the family an open concept kitchen. She loves feeding her young kids healthy food and her ideal kitchen would open up her family room. This way she could oversee her kids as she was cooking.
Here was the concept that got accepted by the client
When she saw this, she was very excited and couldn’t believe that her home could look like this.
Since we had to remove 2 walls we needed to use a header/ i beam to make the home stable. A nice eat-in island was something she always wanted in her dream home, but didn’t think she would be able to get in this one.
We were able to give them their Dream kitchen and solve all her problems. We did move the washer dryer to their garage – which works much better because before this, all their pots and pans were in the garage and she had to constantly run around to find them. This kitchen has a clean transitional no fuss look.
We added beadboard details to the back panel of the island and used a more decorative base molding.
Here is a no-touch faucet that she was so happy to get.
These drawers in the pantry are sturdy and hold a ton of stuff in her kitchen.
Using a clear glass back splash allows her to use pops of colors, and she can change them whenever she wants to.
This kitchen is so in line with their personality. There are a lot of details but the story is said in a subtle manner. Now this will be a kitchen which they can enjoy for a long time and this home will see at least 2 generations from the same family call this their childhood home.
Isn’t that precious?
When it comes to kitchen renovations, space planning helps us get the best layout and we are able to give 2-3 options to the clients. Every inch in your kitchen counts, especially if you don’t have a large kitchen. It also helps us consider the possibilities of opening up walls and being able to utilize space you never knew you had.
If you are having trouble imagining your Dream kitchen, give me a call. I love helping middle class families live their ideal lifestyle.
