Sometimes I’m asked to re-design a living room or family room. Depending on the time line & the budget, we start with looking at the essential sofa. For a tight budget, I like to make the seating a priority. Knowing lifestyle of the family is the most important thing for the room to be functional.
I’ve walked into so many people’s homes where they have white or beige walls & big black couches. Why? Why O Lord?? Are these black couches more comfortable than everything else that’s out there? Or is it because Black is a neutral color, so people feel its a safer bet?
If you really like a black couch, lets do something else with your walls. Or at least bring in some drama with lighting & window treatments. I hope those of you who have black couches wont hate me right now. If you have them, don’t worry you can still make it work.
Check out these 2 living room designs I gave my recent clients. Concept becomes important as they can then create the room of their dreams in stages rather than doing it all at once. I love using chairs instead of doing the matching sofa & loveseat combination that they sell every where.
If you are a do it yourself person but just need a little help figuring out a plan for your room, give me a call.
Here is a fun assignment for someone’s bay window. I love fabrics & its a great look when you are able to layer fabrics with different colors, pattern & texture. I’ve had the good fortune of doing some benches & window seats in the past 2 years. Some were made custom & some where I picked up pillows from Home Goods. So don’t feel shy trying out something like this.
However keep in mind if someone is going to be sitting there & how often. If so put your money into the seat cushion & just have enough cushions to be comfortable. This particular window was very deep, so we layered with different fabrics & made some custom pillows. We also re upholstered 2 chairs that they had in their family for a very long time.
