Lighting is such an important element in design. Lighting can really make or break your room. Most people don’t give enough thought to lighting. Some of the older homes usually don’t have any lighting. Lighting depended on the amount of windows you had & the table or floor lamps which you used. Nowadays its common to put in the overhead can lights. While its not a decorative feature, it certainly adds function to any room. A well lit room usually has lights in different levels. This also adds to the drama of the room.
There are 3 main kinds of lighting to keep in mind:
1) Ambient lighting is also known as general lighting, provides an area with overall illumination. It can be accomplished with chandeliers, ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights and with lanterns mounted on the outside of the home. Having a central source of ambient light in all rooms is fundamental to a good lighting plan.
Here is one of the kitchens which we did recently in Morganville, NJ. Great example of ambient lighting Good general lighting in the kitchen area & a chandelier in the eat in area.
2) Task lighting helps you perform specific tasks, such as reading, grooming, preparing and cooking food, doing homework, working on hobbies, playing games and balancing your checkbook. It can be provided by recessed and track lighting, pendant lighting and under cabinet lighting, as well as by portable floor and desk lamps.
This white shaker kitchen in Blemar, NJ is a perfect example of task lighting with its pendant light & under cabinet lights.
3) Accent lighting adds drama to a room by creating visual interest. As part of an interior design scheme, it is used to draw the eye to houseplants, paintings, sculptures and other prized possessions. It can also be used to highlight the texture of a brick or stone wall, window treatments or outdoor landscaping.
